When it comes down to a milligram: test production, very small quantities, series with maximum throughput.
With us, you are prepared for all requirements and challenges. There is a suitable product from our extruder family for everyone.
What they all have in common:
Leistritz Pharma extruders are highly configurable, scalable, reliable for these highly sensitive applications - and benchmarks in terms of quality.
That's why we have developed special extruders for the pharmaceutical and life science industries: the models in our Leistritz PH series.
Leistritz Pharma twin screw extruder - created out of passion
What do top athletes, chess professionals and Leistritz engineers have in common? They confirm one rule: excellence is based on passion. We are enthusiastic about what we do. This has made us the leading manufacturer of extruders and extrusion systems for pharmaceutical applications.
We develop designs, features and functions that bring decisive advantages.
A few examples? Torque control. WIP possibilities. Short processing time. Flexible screw geometry for easy adaptation to specific requirements.
We are delighted to develop your individual solutions with you.

Designed for consistently high quality
Dosing Units
Several solid and liquid dosing units are possible. The precise product feed to the extruder is based on gravimetric and, if required, volumetric dosing systems for solids and liquids.
The Control
The control system enables monitoring and precise compliance with the set process parameters. The HMI (human/machine interface) is used to control the system and set the target values. The SCADA system runs in the background to collect and record all operating data. The control system is implemented in accordance with 21 CFR part 11.
Closed Housing
The entire unit is designed in accordance with current GMP guidelines. This means complying with high hygiene standards to keep the system clean and easy to clean.
Stainless Steel Frame
The frames of the process and drive unit are made of stainless steel. The surfaces are polished for easy cleaning. The cover can be removed manually to reconfigure the extruder.

Application and Processes
Melt or solid liquid extrusion, plus various granulation processes: Our twin-screw extruders enable different processes. With remarkably high continuity.
Melt extrusion
The pharmaceutical twin-screw extruder shows its strengths in the melt extrusion process. Despite the comparatively high extrusion temperatures, the process is also suitable for thermolabile active ingredients. It mixes the active ingredient, polymer and excipients quickly and reliably.
The ideal process for poorly soluble substances.
Solid lipid extrusion
Extrusion also processes heat-sensitive APIs (Active Pharmaceutical Ingredients). Lipids are particularly suitable for this, as they have a low melting point or range. Another advantage is that the process does not require a solidification step and is solvent-free.
Granulation
Our extruders practically integrate themselves into an existing production line. Thanks to their modularity, both melt and wet granulation can be realized. Moist extrusion is also possible with suitable dies.
Transdermal application and implants
Melt extrusion can be used to produce a variety of pharmaceuticals such as tablets and pellets for capsule filling. Also implants and transdermal patches - and more. Filament extrusion with subsequent or direct 3D printing also enables personalized dosage forms.
